ABOUT ME

I am the Red Lotus Mama, but most of my friends call me Nic.

At thirtysomething years old (stopped including the second number of my age a couple of years ago), I still look like I am in my 20s, thanks to good Asian genes. I have a gorgeous 6 year old daughter (with my X husband) who I call Princess D. Other than 3 months in London during college, I have lived in California my entire life — grew up in the LA valley (yes, I have a Valley Girl accent), attended college in San Diego, and lived in San Francisco for 6 years. But, San Diego is where I feel most at home. My days are spent working full time as a project manage, juggling my daughter’s schedule and playing with our puppy Chloe. I daydream about getting paid to photograph and write about my life experiences, practicing yoga daily and living in a beach front cottage.

MY PSEUDONYM
I had been practicing yoga for 5 years around the time I got pregnant with Princess D. The Buddhists believe that the lotus flower embodies infinite potential — renewal, transformation and new beginnings. There are different colors of lotus flowers each having their own meaning. The red lotus symbolizes the original nature of the heart. It is the lotus of love, compassion, passion, activity and all the qualities of the heart. To me this identified the new strange and unknown world of motherhood.

MY CAMERA
After my daughter was born I discovered how important it was to captured her life through photos. Because of her I fell in love with seeing how life looks through a lens. There is still so much for me to learn about photography, but it is a hobby I found I am good at. I use a Nikon D60 with a combination of a 135mm telephoto lens and a 85mm micro lens.
